PSV = Straight to DVD
I was Talking to Ralph the other day about whether or not we should buy a Playstation Vita and he said to me: “You know, every time I played a game like God of War on my PSP, no matter how good it was, it always felt very straight to DVD.”
And so true… It is literally impossible to ever make a game for a portable system as good as the best console games that are played on large flat-screen TVs with surround sound. God of War is a perfect example of this. God of War is an epic game with beautiful graphics and settings worthy of the gods themselves. This type of game just doesn’t translate well on mobile platforms. Staring at something epic on a tiny screen removes a good chunk of its epic-ness.
This brings me to Uncharted on the Vita, which is what sparked the conversation between Ralph and I. We Loved Uncharted 3. We loved the story, the graphics, the sound design and above all, the scope of the game, especially during the amazing set-piece moments. I play Uncharted on my 46 inch Sammy LED with my Mirage Nanosat 5.1 system bumping, which makes for an beautiful, immersing gaming experience. For me, Uncharted on the Vita is like a milkshake without the ice cream. What’s the point?
When I am on the go I’d rather pull out my (tiny) iPod Touch and play Angry Birds, or Cut the Rope for a few minutes. I don’t even have the time to play an involving game like Uncharted when I’m not at home, and when I am home, there are a hundred games I’d rather be playing on either my consoles or my PC. I’m certainly not going to want to sit in front of my home theater system and stare down at a tiny (though beautiful) screen in order to play watered-down versions of console games I love. And yes I realize you can play Vita games on your TV and vice-versa, which is a feature I would only use to amuse my (not so) inner nerd.
Ralph is a sucker for all new tech however, and he will no doubt get a Vita, which means I too will have a Vita. So expect to hear more on this one…
